Sutrener Mick Price enjoyed a great day in Morphettville pointed out his son Tarzino, Jungle Magnatecontinuing his brilliant form from Adelaide with success in 2022 South Australian Derby.
Jungle Magnate, the son of 2015 VRC Derby winner Tarzin (pictured), won the SA Derby 2022 in Adelaide for Mick Price and Michael Kent Jr.
Following a steady victory in Listed Adelaide Guineas s ConclusionPrice & co-trainer Michael Kent Jr. they were thrilled to win the Group 1 trophy with the Jungle Magnate in 148th $ 500,000 edition South Australian derby (2500m).
It was a special result for Price who trained the horse’s father, Tarzin, to win the 2015 Victoria Derby.
“An underrated stallion,” Price said Racing.com talking about his former star.
“At this time next year I think we’re going to have another big strong Tarzin here.”
Jungle Magnate was unable to emulate his father in that famous classic in Flemington, he managed to run only 10th in last year’s Victoria Derby results, but redeemed himself in Adelaide at the SA Derby.
“We had a nice circle around this race as its highlight,” Price said.
The last start horse pulled out of Group 2 Chairman’s Stakes (2000m) and he franked that form by returning to grade and distance to become the first three-year-old after Leicester (2018) to make a double success.
Jockey Mark Zahra he had only his second run aboard the Jungle Magnate and made a perfect two-on-two record after previously riding the youngster to victory on his debut last June at Sandown.
“I think Zahra was a nice ride,” Price said.
“There were a lot of horses in it at the top of the plain.
“He’s just a Group 1 rider, isn’t he?” He is one of the best Group 1 drivers in Australia. ”
Son Of Emperor showed brilliant speed in the jump to move forward and lead the field, while Zahra gladly settled into the second half of the field at Jungle Magnate.
There was a strong pace in this day’s feature-length race and a tense field where one of the early favorites, Detonator Jack, came back dead in the last 16 lengths of the lead within 1200m.
There were 600 meters left until the end, the field began to gather and then all eyes quickly turned to the Jungle Magnate ($ 7.50) which bypassed them before betraying them with a lightning turn.
He ran to the lead at 300 meters and was quite clear that he would lose Cliff Brown-trained jafet ($ 10) for almost two lengths.
Previously undefeated Ciaron Maher and David Eustace-trained Detonator Jack ($ 3.50) was stunningly late, making up for everything from back to third place and the completed SA Derby trifecta.
Beaten favorite Alegron ($ 3.10F) for James Cummings and Godolfin stable meanwhile managed to run only fourth, four and a half lengths won.
Price has ruled out any plans to go to Brisbane on a Group 1 $ 1 million opportunity Queensland derby (2400 m) in two weeks, instead of confirming that the Jungle Magnate would now head to the fence for a well-deserved spell.
“I never want to go too far with my horses,” he said.
“I want to turn it off. He did a good job and I would love to see him in the fence. ”
